Auschwitz-Birkenau Tour

Auschwitz, the site of the 20th Centuries most appalling crime against humanity, is a symbol of genocide, terror and the Holocaust. It is also a memorial of human heroism, solidarity and resistance to crime and terror. But most important of all, Auschwitz is a grave, hiding the ashes of uncountable people who died here during World War II.

It was here, near the small Polish provincial town of Oswięcim, which like other parts of the former 2nd Republic of Poland, was under German occupation during World War II, that Adolf Hitler’s final solution to the Jewish question was played out. Between 1942 and January 1945 over 3 million men, women and children were gassed, shot or tortured to death.

Enter under the infamous sign “Macht ein Frei” (work makes you free) and you will be exposed to the horrifying barbarism of the third reich. Testament to mans’ inhumanity to man this is a sobering place, a reminder to every one of the terrible consequences when reason gives way to hatred and genocide.

The date of 14th June, 1940 when the first group of political prisoners was brought to Auschwitz is symbolically regarded as the date when the Auschwitz Concentration Camp (KL) was established.

The site was entered on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.
