Gdansk City Break
Gdansk has been ruled by Poland, interspersed with periods of Germanic control, spent many years as a member of the Hanseatic League and two spells as a free city. For much of its history the majority of its inhabitants were German-speakers who referred to their city as Danzig, but after World War II it became firmly Polish. Already you can imagine some of the beauty and culture to be found during a city break to Gdansk.
The Solidarity movement started at the Gdansk shipyard and, under the leadership of Gdansk political activist Lech Walesa played a major role in bringing an end to communist rule across Central Europe. It is also the home and birthplace of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who is of Kashubian origin.
The city and its personality reflect this colourful past and the many cultures which have shaped its identity. Today, Gdansk is one of Poland's cultural powerhouses with a score of festivals, museums and galleries to prove it. Snoop around and discover for yourself the jewel in Poland's crown.
